ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a system of health care that is widely used around the world.  Dating back thousands of years, acupuncture is based on a holistic view of the world in which everything in nature is interrelated with the human body.

Acupuncture can be used to treat ailments ranging from chronic pain, allergies, and headaches, to issues like infertility, fatigue, and stress.

Different from western medicine, acupuncture does not concentrate on a symptomatic approach to healing.  Rather, it looks for and treats the underlying causes of illness.

FAQ

What can I expect at a session?

Dr. Luo will greet you and invite you into your private room. He will then ask you some questions about your health and your symptoms. He will feel the pulses in your wrist and look at your tongue, looking for particular signs (a part of the Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis process), giving him a clear picture of your condition and the knowledge of which Meridians (channels of vital energy in the body) and corresponding points need to be stimulated.

You will lie down comfortably on the table, and Dr. Luo will insert the thin acupuncture needles. His method favors less needles for precise effect, rather than more needles. He may also utilize a heating lamp or a warming herb called Moxa, if your condition requires warming energy.

You will rest quietly for about 20-30 minutes while the treatment takes effect, and then Dr. Luo will remove the needles. Typically, at this point patients feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Depending on your particular condition, Dr. Luo will let you know when the best timeframe is for your next appointment, in order to continue healing at an optimal rate.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Yes! Acupuncture is an ancient practice that has been refined and perfected over millennia. In the hands of Dr. Luo, you can rest assured that with the expertise he gained as a former attending physician and clinical instructor at Shan Dong University Hospital, your safety is 100% guaranteed. In our modern age, sterile, single-use needles have come to be used. Dr. Luo uses a special type of these sterile needles that come in a protective sheath which he uses to grip the needle for insertion. His skin never contacts the insertion point of the needle. The needles are inserted into the superficial layer of skin, there is no risk of injury or  blood loss.

You may have seen a bead of blood appear on occasion when an acupuncture needle is removed, this is simply from the superficial capillaries in the skin, and is usually a sign of stagnant or excess Qi (energy) being unblocked and starting to flow again.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very, very fine. They are quite different from injection needles which are larger in diameter, hollow, and have a sharpened edge for cutting. Acupuncture needles feel nothing like injection needles. Some people feel no pain at all. In addition, Dr. Luo uses needles which have a plastic cylinder casing for insertion, which is pressed against the skin, while the needle is swiftly inserted. This has an effect on the nerves of the skin, which makes it less sensitive.

Dr. Luo understands that each person has a different level of sensitivity, and he will ensure that your comfort is his number one priority.
